When Your Career Gets Stuck

Can we talk about something a little uncomfortable?

A lot of people are stuck in their careers — not because they’re not talented, but because the thing that used to make them valuable… just isn’t enough anymore.

Take change management.

Fifteen, twenty years ago, companies were desperate for people who could manage transformation. We were flying in to untangle complexity, steer the ship, and make it all stick. It was hot. Strategic. Lucrative.

Now? It’s table stakes. Everyone claims to “do change.” And if you’ve been in the game for decades, you’ve probably realized… that expertise alone doesn’t command the premium it used to. I know I have.

So what did we do? We expanded. We grew. We found new ways to create value — and price our services accordingly.

Same story in IT. I’ve worked with companies still clinging to mainframes, still running virtual machines like it’s 2009, still pushing to maintain expensive legacy systems just to justify legacy skill sets.

That is not a long-term strategy.

And now?

The pressure to evolve is real. And relentless. If you want to stay relevant, you’ve got to stay vigilant.

Here’s where to start:

✅ Audit your skills – What’s still in demand? What’s fading? What’s next?
✅ Find new problems to solve – Stop marketing what you used to do. Start solving what no one else is.
✅ Get uncomfortable – Reinvention doesn’t happen in your comfort zone.

Because here’s the truth: Staying stuck is more dangerous than taking a risk. While you're standing still, the world is moving fast.

So — don’t just hang on. Evolve. The future won’t wait for anyone.
